5 Nutrients to Boost Your Immune System

Is anyone concerned about coming down with viruses and other illnesses because of Covid19? We are now entering the warmer months! Did you know a change of seasons can compromise your immune system? I thought it would be great to share five foods and herbs to support the immune system and keep you healthy by eating nutritious foods. 

Greens

I love love love green vegetables – consider eating broccoli, spinach, bok choy – these veggies are so crucial for your immune system! They are delicious in stirfries and an excellent source of essential nutrients like iron, fiber, calcium, and vitamins C and K. They inspire your immune cells in your gut and skin to function correctly. These guys are essential players in improving immunity!

Garlic

Antivirals like garlic have strong antimicrobial properties, making them a powerful weapon against illnesses! It is also prebiotic, meaning it contains nutrients that nourish the good bacteria in your gut. The gut is the heart of the immune system, so let’s improve flora and fauna there!

 Brazil nuts

Selenium is found in Brazil nuts. They contain an antioxidant that has been shown to support immune function and inflammation. Your aim might be to eat some every couple of days to support your immunity! So make sure you get enough of these little gems.

Echinacea

This herb is known to fight infections and is an excellent support to your immune system. It helps the white blood cells to fight infection. 

5. Citrus

Fruits like lemons, limes, and oranges are excellent for immunity! They contain loads of Vitamin C, which increases the production of white blood cells. It’s another tool to help fight infections. Citrus is another juicy food that reduces inflammation, improves gastrointestinal health, and plays a role in preventing diseases like diabetes and cancer.
